Groundbreaking Surgical Procedures for the Treatment of Complex Vascular Malformations at Mitera Hospital.

The 2nd Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Hygeia Hospital is pleased to announce the successful completion of two complex surgical procedures in patients with extensive vascular malformations. The operations were performed by Mr. Nikos Paraskevas, Director of the 2nd Vascular Surgery Clinic, in collaboration with his team and with the contribution of the leading specialists Mrs. Annouk Bisdorff, Radiologist and Coordinator in charge of Vascular Malformations, and Mr. Claude Laurian, Vascular Surgeon and Mr. Didier Salvan, ENT from the Lariboisière Specialized Center in Paris.

The patients who underwent the procedures presented complex cases of vascular malformations requiring a specialized approach and expertise.

The first case involved an 11-year-old girl with extensive venous malformation in the right knee area, which caused severe pain and required daily pain medication. Despite six previous attempts at embolization, the symptoms had improved only partially and temporarily. At the time of surgery, the malformation was completely removed from the knee joint and quadriceps muscle was performed. Three months later she has a very good functional result, she has no pain and will be able to start activities that she was not allowed to do in the past.

The second case was a 38-year-old man with a large arteriovenous malformation in the region of the left ear and mastoid process. The malformation caused significant tinnitus and severe aesthetic deformity, and the two previous embolization attempts had failed to produce the desired result. The malformation was completely removed at the time of surgery and three months later the patient is asymptomatic and very satisfied with the aesthetic result.

The procedures were performed with the active participation of Mr. Stavros Theodorou, vascular surgeon, and Ms. Vasiliki Prapa and Ms. Stefania Kouni, anesthesiologists, in addition to the qualified physicians of the Lariboisière Center.

The Director of the Second Vascular Surgery Clinic, Mr. Nikos Paraskevas said: “Through our direct collaboration with the Vascular Malformation Center at the Lariboisière Hospital in Paris, we provide complex cases with a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and various therapeutic solutions. Founded in 1976, the “consultation multidisciplinaire des angiomes” was the first center in Europe to combine multidisciplinary case analysis and specialization in vascular malformations, resulting today in considerable experience in the treatment of this condition. This collaboration strengthens our ability to provide high quality medical services and improve our treatment approaches.”
