The first integrated Paediatric Ophthalmology Department was established

In order to meet the need for an integrated treatment of children’s eye diseases, MITERA Paediatric Clinic has established the first integrated Paediatric Ophthalmology Department in Greece.

This new Paediatric Ophthalmology Department will be introduced to the scientific community on Saturday, March 21rst 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the “N. LOUROS” Lecture Hall of MITERA. Mr. Konstandinos Stavrou, Chairman of MITERA BoD, Mr. Christos Bartsokas, Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics – Director of MITERA Paediatric Clinic and Mrs. Georgia Chroussou, Professor of Ophthalmology – Head of MITERA Paediatric Ophthalmology Department, will welcome the scientific community by their speeches during the ceremony. The presentation will be followed by the Department’s 1st Annual Workshop on Paediatric Ophthalmology.

Developed in a separate area of the MITERA Paediatrics Clinic, the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department has an outpatient office and a fully-equipped operating room and is able to treat ANY case of children’s eye diseases. The state-of-the-art equipment of the Department gives the opportunity to the Partners-Doctors to perform skilled operations.

Modern Ophthalmology demands the mixing of various subspecialties which jointly handle complicated problems. For this reason, the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department is staffed with a team of outstanding scientists: Mrs. Georgia D. Chroussou, MD, Head of the Department, Professor of Ophthalmology of Georgetown University, Washington DC, is specialized at Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. The other subspecialties of Paediatric Ophthalmology are covered as follows:

• Vitreous-Retina and Paediatric Trauma: Mr. Ioannis Stavrakas, Ophthalmologist, Member of FRCS and MRCO.
• Cornea, Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery: Mr. Charilaos Brilakis, Ophthalmologist, MD, MPH.
• Ophthalmic Plastic, Orbital Surgery and Lacrimal Apparatus Surgery: Mr. George Charonis, Ophthalmologist, MD and Mr. Athanasios Roumeliotis, Ophthalmologist, MD.
